How to calculate quantities of plaster materials.

Q. calculate quantities of cement and sand for plaster, for     given cement mortar 1:4,  plaster thickness 12mm, and area of wall 80 sq.m.

Ans:
(mortar is a mixture of cement, sand )
plaster thickness=12mm=12/1000
=0.012m.

volume of mortar=plaster thickness × plaster wall area
=0.012×80=0.96 cu.m

 0.96 cu.m is wet volume of mortar. multiply by (1.35) for dry volume.
( dry volume of mortar is before water mixing
  wet volume of mortar is after water mixing)

 dry volume of mortar=1.35×0.96
=1.296 cu.m
mortar ratio=1:4
sum of ratio=1+4=5

cement volume=(cement part in ratio/(sum of ratio))× dry volume of mortar
=(1/5)×1.296=0.259cu.m
=0.259 × density of cement
(Density of cement=1440kg/cu.m)
=0.259 × 1440=373 kg

sand volume=(sand part in ratio/(sum of ratio))× dry volume of mortar
=(4/5)×1.296=1.037 cu.m
